The Power of Customized Music Education: Insights from Petrova Jones

When it comes to music education, one size definitely does not fit all. This philosophy forms the core of Petrova Jones Music, a thriving custom music education business located on Florida's Treasure Coast. Founded nearly three decades ago by Petrova Jones, this unique approach to music education demonstrates how personalization can transform the way children learn and experience music.

Petrova's journey began rather modestly – teaching piano from the trunk of her car while still a university student herself. What makes her story particularly remarkable is that she was only 16 years old when she started teaching, having immigrated from the United Kingdom on a full scholarship to study music in America. This entrepreneurial spirit quickly translated into a growing client base, and before long, she found herself juggling university studies with teaching 40-50 students weekly. The demand continued to increase, resulting in waitlists even during those early years. This incredible growth eventually necessitated a difficult decision: approximately ten years ago, Petrova took the leap to leave her position in the public school system to dedicate herself fully to her private studio. Today, she teaches from eight in the morning until eight in the evening, six days a week, with a consistently full schedule and a healthy waitlist – truly the definition of a successful small business built on passion and expertise.

One of the most inspiring aspects of Petrova's teaching philosophy is her commitment to inclusivity, particularly regarding children with special needs. She specifically mentions her passion for working with children on the autism spectrum, noting that many of these students possess exceptional musical talents despite sometimes struggling with verbal expression. Petrova believes so strongly in providing quality music education to all children that she pursued a master's degree and state certification in ESE (Exceptional Student Education). This dedication helps counter what she identifies as a common misconception: that children with special needs shouldn't be given the same musical opportunities as their neurotypical peers. Her experience shows that, with proper training and patience, music teachers can create transformative experiences for these children. This inclusive approach also aligns with scholarship opportunities available in Florida for children with special needs seeking music education.

Another insight Petrova shares is about determining when a child is ready to begin music lessons. Rather than adhering strictly to age requirements, she evaluates each child's readiness level individually. Her experience shows that the appropriate starting age can range from three to six years old, depending on the child, with girls sometimes ready slightly earlier than boys due to attention span differences. This individualized approach extends to her entire teaching methodology. As Petrova proudly states, "When you come in for a lesson, you're not going to be handed a music book that everybody else has been going through." Every student at her studio plays different pieces, at different levels, in different styles – all customized to their unique needs, interests, and learning pace.

Beyond her professional achievements, Petrova's personal journey adds another layer of depth to her teaching philosophy. Approximately six to seven years ago, she underwent a stem cell transplant – an experience that prompted her to reevaluate her life's purpose and legacy. This health crisis reinforced her commitment to music education and helping shape young lives. Having started her career as a child performer in London's West End, Petrova found deeper meaning in education and the opportunity to leave a lasting impact. Now, she takes pride in seeing former students graduate from music schools, perform on Broadway, or simply incorporate music into their lives in meaningful ways. This perspective has transformed her daily approach, fostering gratitude and greater appreciation for the privilege of touching lives through music education.
